A practical guide to distributed storage

Ceph, without
the complexity.

Understand how distributed storage works. Make confident architecture decisions. Turn Ceph into a practical solution for your infrastructure.

START WITH THE DATA

One foundation.
Different ways to connect.

Ceph combines storage across servers into a distributed system. Choose the interface your application actually needs.

01 / RBD

Block storage

Virtual disks for virtual machines and other block-oriented workloads. The client manages the filesystem.

Virtual machines · application volumes
02 / CEPHFS

File storage

A shared filesystem for applications that work with files and directories. Metadata services coordinate the namespace.

Shared files · content workflows
03 / RGW

Object storage

An S3-compatible API for applications that store objects in buckets. Access happens through a gateway.

Repositories · application data

DESIGNED FOR FAILURE

Resilience starts
with placement.

Three copies on one server still share one server failure. Ceph placement rules distribute data across the failure domains you define.

Understand the architecture ↗
01

Choose the boundary

A disk, a host or a rack: decide which failure your design must survive.

02

Keep room to recover

Reserve capacity and network bandwidth for rebuilding and rebalancing.

03

Protect the whole path

Client gateways, switches and application recovery matter alongside stored data.

INTERACTIVE CALCULATOR

Plan capacity. Understand resilience.

Calculate your cluster with your own values, compare protection profiles and understand host and rack failures.

EURONAS SOLUTION

Ceph technology.
A guided way to run it.

euroNAS eEKAS brings Ceph-based storage to IT teams through graphical setup and management, with integrated block, file and object services.

Discover eEKAS at euroNAS ↗
euroNASeEKAS
  • Guided cluster and storage provisioning
  • SMB, NFS, iSCSI, NVMe-oF and S3 access
  • IP Groups for relocating service endpoints

Supported combinations depend on the euroNAS release and the qualified architecture.

KEEP EXPLORING

Build your understanding, step by step.

Questions worth asking.

Does Ceph replace backups?

No. Replication and erasure coding protect against selected infrastructure failures. Accidental deletion, ransomware and site loss require a separate backup and recovery strategy.

Can I use Ceph for a small environment?

You can build a small cluster, but distributed storage adds network and operational requirements. Compare its benefits with a simpler storage design before committing.

Is Ceph the same as euroNAS eEKAS?

Ceph is the open-source storage technology. eEKAS is a commercial euroNAS platform that builds on Ceph and adds integrated management and storage services.
